WEEK 1: The Way To Turn

DATE: October 4th

MAIN SCRIPTURE: Mark 1:14–15

SUPPORT SCRIPTURE: Mark 4:1–20

COMMAND: Repent and believe!

MAIN IDEA: The way of Jesus leaves every old way behind.

Sermon Ideas:

- The Kingdom has come near

-- Mark 1:14–15 begins Jesus' public ministry with an announcement: "The time has come. The kingdom of God has come near."

-- Jesus does not begin with advice or self-improvement. He announces that God’s reign has broken into history.

-- The Kingdom has come near because the King has come near.

-- Salvation begins with God’s initiative before it becomes our response.

- Repent and believe

-- Jesus gives two clear commands: repent and believe.

-- Repentance is more than regret or emotion. It is a change of direction, allegiance, and way of life.

-- Repentance means we have to turn – turn away, turn around, turn toward.

-- Belief is more than mental agreement. It is trust in the good news and in Jesus Himself.

-- To turn toward Jesus necessarily means turning away from another road.

- Parabolic Interpretation

-- The Parable of the Sower reveals how people respond

-- Mark 4:1–20 deepens the command to "repent and believe."

The same seed falls on different kinds of soil.

The difference is not the seed but the reception.

Some reject the Word.

Some receive it temporarily but have no root.

Some allow worries, wealth, and competing desires to choke it.

Some hear, receive, and bear fruit.

-- The question becomes: What kind of soil am I?

-- Do I have the kind of heart that is willing to repent, turn, and believe?

- Overall Markan theme

-- Throughout Mark, many people hear Jesus, but not everyone understands or follows.

-- Discipleship begins with truly hearing the Word and allowing it to change direction.

-- The Gospel does not simply add Jesus to our present path. It calls us to turn away and turn onto another road.

APPLICATION:

- Identify your old road Jesus is calling you to leave behind.

- Repent honestly of sin, self-rule, and competing loyalties.

- Believe the Gospel personally, not merely culturally or intellectually.

- Examine what may be choking spiritual growth in your life.

- If you have never trusted Jesus for salvation, this is your next step in way of Jesus.
