WEEK 1: Enthroned As King
DATE: April 12th
THEOLOGICAL CONCEPT: Glorification. Who He is. He is Glorified.
KEY SCRIPTURES: John 17:1-5; Philippians 2:5-11; Revelation 5:11-13
- John 17:1-15
Jesus speaks of glory as both restored and revealed (“the glory I had with you”).
The cross and resurrection are not interruptions but are the means by which His glory is displayed.
Glory here is relational (with the Father) and revelational (to the world).
- Philippians 2:5-11
This ancient hymn traces the story arch of Christ: pre-existence to incarnation to humiliation to death and ultimately to exaltation.
"God highly exalted Him" signals divine vindication. The cross was not a defeat for Christ, but the pathway to His enthronement.
"Name above every name" is not just an honorific title or statement, but it implies universal authority.
"Every knee… every tongue" echoes Isaiah 45:23, thus applying Yahweh language to Jesus, which is a strong Christological claim.
- The suffering of Jesus was not wasted. We glory in His sufferings.
- Glorification is the public reversal of the cross. His humiliation has been transformed.
- The same Jesus who was rejected is now universally acknowledged.
- His kingship is not for the future only, but it is already established.
- Crucifixion is Christ’s coronation not His condemnation. Yes, He is glorified.
APPLICATION:
- We must worship Christ with reverence. He is not a helper or mere servant, but Christ is King and that changes how we worship Him.
- We must submit our life before Him. His royal authority is not optional.
- We can find confidence in Him. He is exalted forever, nothing will change that.
