WEEK 2: The Pit of the Rebellious

SERMON FOCUS: Jonah in the belly of the fish

KEY SCRIPTURE: Jonah 2

MAIN IDEA: The way out begins when you turn around.

SERMON IDEAS:

- Jonah’s pit is different from Joseph’s, Jeremiah’s, and David’s.

- Jonah is not in the depths because others betrayed him or because he was faithful. Jonah is in the depths because he ran from God.

- The movement of Jonah’s story is downward.

-- He goes down to Joppa,

-- down into the ship,

-- down into the sea, and

-- down into the belly of the fish.

-- Sin always takes us farther down than we expected to go.

- Yet Jonah 2 shows us the mercy of God. Even in the depths, Jonah prays.

- The belly of the fish becomes an unlikely place of repentance.

- This metaphorical pit Jonah created becomes the place where he begins turning back to God.

- This does not excuse Jonah’s rebellion. It reveals God’s mercy.

- God is gracious enough to meet us even in pits we created through our own disobedience.

- Christ Connection: Jesus is the greater Jonah.

-- Jonah was cast into the sea because of his own rebellion,

-- but Jesus entered death because of ours.

-- Jonah came out after three days,

-- but Jesus rose again with power and salvation for all who repent and believe.

‍APPLICATION:

- Take responsibility for the pits you created. Repentance begins when we stop blaming others and become honest before God.

- Cry out to God from the depths. There is no place so low that prayer cannot rise from it.

- Trust God’s mercy to restore what rebellion has broken. Repentance can become the beginning of restoration.
