WEEK 2: The Pit of the Faithful

SERMON FOCUS: Jeremiah in the cistern

KEY SCRIPTURE: Jeremiah 38

MAIN IDEA: Obedience may bring pressure, but God brings presence.

SERMON IDEAS:

- Jeremiah was thrown into a pit because he spoke the word of the Lord faithfully. His suffering was not the result of compromise, but obedience.

- This is a difficult truth. Faithfulness does not always make life easier.

- Sometimes faithfulness makes life harder before it gets better. Jeremiah’s obedience placed him in direct conflict with people who did not want to hear God’s word.

- The cistern in Jeremiah 38 was muddy, dark, and dangerous. Jeremiah sank down into the mud, physically trapped because he remained faithful to his calling.

- Yet God did not abandon Jeremiah in the pit. God used Ebed-Melek to advocate for him and help pull him out. This reminds us that God can send help into the pit, even when we do not know where help will come from.

- Christ Connection: Jesus is the faithful Prophet who spoke the truth and was rejected.

-- He was opposed,

-- falsely accused, and

-- suffered because of His obedience to the Father.

-- Through His faithfulness, we receive salvation.

APPLICATION:

- Do not assume hardship means you are outside the will of God. Sometimes the pit comes because you chose faithfulness.

- Stay faithful even when obedience costs you. God sees the integrity of your obedience.

- Receive the help God sends. Sometimes deliverance comes through people God places around us.
