WEEK 1: David - Thank You, My Deliverer
DATE: November 1st
MAIN SCRIPTURE: Psalm 34
SUPPORT SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 21:10–15; 22:1–2; Psalm 18:2
MAIN IDEA: He heard my cry and brought me through.
Sermon Ideas
- Study the superscription of Psalm 34 and its connection to David's escape in 1 Samuel 21:10–15. What does David's fear and vulnerability add to the force of his praise?
- Trace the repeated pattern of seeking, crying, hearing, and delivering in verses 4, 6, 17, and 19. How does this repeated movement reveal God as David's Deliverer?
- Examine Psalm 34:1, "I will extol the Lord at all times." Why is this significant coming from a man who has just survived a destabilizing season?
- Study verse 4 carefully. David says God delivered him "from all my fears." How is deliverance from fear related to, but distinct from, deliverance from danger?
- Explore the image of the "angel of the Lord encamping around those who fear Him" in verse 7. How does this strengthen the theme of divine protection?
- Study "Taste and see that the Lord is good" in verse 8. Why does David move from testimony to invitation?
- Connect Psalm 34 to 1 Samuel 22:1–2. How might David's experience of God as Deliverer prepare him to lead distressed, indebted, and discontented people?
- Examine verses 17–19. How does David hold together two truths: the righteous have many troubles, and the Lord delivers them?
- Cross-reference Psalm 18:2, where David explicitly calls God "my deliverer." How consistent is this understanding of God across David's life?
APPLICATION:
- Remember where God heard you and brought you through.
- Do not let today's trouble erase yesterday's testimony.
- Thank God not only because the crisis ended, but because in the crisis you discovered that He is your Deliverer.
- Share your testimony. Someone else may need courage from the story of how God met you.
