KEY SCRIPTURES: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10
- Paul emphasizes the triad: "work of faith, labor of love, steadfastness of hope" (v.3). These are not abstract virtues but visible expressions of gospel transformation. They are a faithful church.
- "Chosen by God" (v.4) grounds their identity in divine initiative, not human achievement. Their faithfulness is grounded in their relationship to God.
- The gospel came "not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction" (v.5). Conversion is Spirit-enabled and embodied. Being a faithful church is all about receiving the full Gospel fully.
- They "turned to God from idols" (v.9). Conversion is both repentance (turning from) and allegiance (turning to). Faithfulness means to repent and turn to God.
- The church had an eschatological orientation, "to wait for his Son from heaven" (v.10). Waiting is active loyalty, it is truly the epitome of faithfulness.
APPLICATION:
- Evaluate whether our faith produces observable fruit in love and endurance.
- Consider what “idols” require renunciation in order to serve the living and true God.
- Cultivate a future-oriented hope that shapes present obedience.
