WEEK 5: Until He Comes, We Will Be a Hopeful Church

DATE: March 29th

KEY SCRIPTURES: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

- Paul corrects ignorance "about those who are asleep" (v.13).

- The young church was concerned that those that had died due to persecution will miss the coming of the Lord, but Paul is reframing their understanding on how truly great our hope truly is. The dead will rise! (v. 16) Resurrection is a reality.

- Christian grief is distinct but not absent. "you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope"(v. 13). The distinction is that we have great hope. Resurrection, not reincarnation, is a grand distinction in the Christian worldview.

- Paul reiterates that our Christian hope is grounded in historical reality: "Jesus died and rose again" (v.14). This is a fact. It was witnessed by many. It is historical. Therefore, this resurrection logic governs our eschatology.

- The Lord's descent (v. 16) echoes royal imagery; believers meet Christ as a welcoming delegation just like the "parousia of Caesar".

- "And so we will be with the Lord, forever" (v. 17). The climax is relational presence and attachment to Christ, it is not celestial escapism or detachment. Our hope is anchored in the vision that we will be in relationship with Christ forever.

- "Encourage one another" (v. 18). Since the church is a place of hope, our eschatology is actually pastoral in nature, again not speculative. Talking about the end is not fearful or gloomy, but it is encouraging.

- We are a people of hope with a history that ends in hope.

APPLICATION:

- Grieve honestly while anchoring sorrow in resurrection hope.

- Reorient hope from escapism to confident reunion with Christ.

- Use eschatological truth to strengthen one another.
