WEEK 3: Until He Comes, We Will Be a Resilient Church
DATE: March 15th
KEY SCRIPTURES: 1 Thessalonians 3:1-13
- Paul sends Timothy to encourage the Thessalonians (v. 2-3); “to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, so that no one would be unsettled by these trials.”
- Early churches needed pastoral support and affirmation amid persecution. Paul wanted the church to remain steadfast and resilient amidst trials.
- Paul wanted to remind the church that affliction and opposition are not evidence of abandonment but confirmation of belonging to God’s covenant people (v. 3). Churches are made to be resilient, not fragile.
- Timothy’s report strengthens Paul’s perseverance in the mission (v. 6–7). In that way, resilience is relational, supported by accountability and encouragement. Paul is becoming more resilient because of the young church, and vice versa.
- Paul prays for their growth in love and endurance (v. 12–13). Love and holiness are inseparable from perseverance and resilience. This church was facing so much Roman resistance, but Paul believed they could keep growing in love.
- Resilience is communal, not personal heroics, so much so that Paul is bursting with joy, pride, and longing for this young church. Together, they can be resilient.
APPLICATION:
- Stand firm in your convictions while supporting one another in the church.
- Anchor hope in God’s promises when life is uncertain or difficult.
- Grow intentionally in love, so endurance is fueled by relational commitment rather than mere duty.
