WEEK 2: Until He Comes, We Will Be a Courageous Church

DATE: March 8th

KEY SCRIPTURES: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-12, 13-20

- Paul defends the integrity of his ministry, for he did not teach with any “error or impurity” (v.3). Paul was showing them that true courage is rooted in the unchanging Gospel.

- No matter how suffering or outrageous treatment (v. 1-2), stand courageous in Christ.

- "Approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel" (v .4). You become a courageous church when you realize that your ministry accountability is vertical before it is horizontal.

- Paul is saying, because God approves, I will not be moved. It is not popularity before man, but transparency before God that breeds courage.

- Paul contrasts between flattery/greed and gentleness (v. 5–7). Courageous people don’t need to talk like this or act with scarcity. They are bold. They speak truthfully and trust that God will provide. They are literally like children.

- Paul also shows that apostolic leadership reflects parental imagery: nurturing mother (v. 7) and exhorting father (v. 11). In order to see courage and faithfulness grow in Thessalonica, Paul loved them dearly.

- "We were ready to share… not only the gospel of God but also our own selves" (v. 8). Courage includes relational vulnerability.

- Paul says that our conduct should be “worthy of God” (v. 12), which ties ethical formation to divine calling into kingdom and glory. It takes courage to do the right thing.

- Paul says that they accepted the word with courage and fully, and that they imitate God’s churches in Judea despite being persecuted (v. 13-14), this is true courage. Paul says this makes them his great glory and joy (v. 19-20). He loves them for their courage.

APPLICATION:

- Examine motives in service and leadership—approval of God versus approval of people.

- Practice courageous witness marked by gentleness, not aggression.

- Invest personally in discipleship, not merely programmatically.
